seminar gathers asturias, lut-od kids

For the first time, all Tsinelas beneficiaries from Asturias and Pinamungajan, Cebu met in a seminar aimed to help them develop self esteem and leadership skills.

The seminar was held from April 23 to April 27. Acting as facilitators were Annabelle, Vanessa and Chona from the Sentro sa Katilingban. It was held at the Cultural Center of the Piarist Fathers in Guadalupe, Cebu City.

The activity was one of the projects undertaken by Tsinelas in partnership with the Sentro sa Katilingban.

Prior to the activity, Sentro visited Lut-od National High School in Pinamungajan and Looc Norte National High School in Asturias to gather data that they could use in making the seminar relevant to the students.

The seminar culminated with a city tour that brought the students to local destinations like the Birhen sa Regla Church in Lapu-Lapu City.  

Bands to play for tsinelas

At least four local bands and a theater group will perform in Kahayag Café on Oct. 14 for the benefit of Tsinelas scholars in Pinamungajan and Asturias. The show is called “Duyog.”

Yano, Tsinelas’ student volunteer group from STC and the event’s organizer, said they will use the proceeds of the show to buy school supplies for students of the two beneficiary schools.

List of performers includes the bands Sikabay, Pringols, Phylum and Missing Filemon. Also scheduled to perform is STC’s Buhilaman Theater Group. Tickets, at P45 each, are available at the gate, or one can contact Cheryl at 09264477042. Show starts at 9 p.m.

Kahayag Café is located at the old COACO building in Mabolo.

tsinelas expands to asturias

TSINELAS launched its Asturias chapter on June 5, 2005, with its officers taking oath before the beneficiaries and their parents.

The Tsinelas board of directors attended the oath-taking ceremony and officially welcomed the members of the chapter to the organization. The event also served as the chapter’s first general assembly, with members interacting with the beneficiaries and their parents. (more…)

how you can help

Tsinelas accepts donation in cash or in kind. Among the most common needs of students are school supplies, books and other reading materials. You can also donate other items that help improve school facilities: a set of encyclopedia, a computer, tables, chairs. This way, everybody in the school benefits from the donation.

You can also donate cash. Tsinelas has estimated P2,000 (two thousand pesos) as enough to cover the basic needs of one student in one school year. This already includes a set of uniform (including shoes), a backpack, school supplies and payment for school fees. For your donation, write us at tsinelas_education@yahoo.com

tabay to visit Lut-od

Tabay, Tsinelas’ campus volunteer group in Southwestern University (SWU), has scheduled a visit to Lut-od National High School (LNHS) in Pinamungajan, Cebu next month. The group set the visit on Oct. 15 and 16.

Students make fun of the building by calling it ‘chicken coop.’ The school is Tsinelas’ pilot area. It is located about five kilometers from Pinamungajan town proper.

Note: Although Tsinelas has so far implemented its 2005 general plans according to schedule, it still welcomes donations like books and school supplies. Tsinelas doesn’t limit its assistance to its ‘full scholars’ and will support more students if resources allow it. (more…)

campus volunteer program

    THE Tsinelas Association Inc. believes in the role of the youth in improving society. Tsinelas believes that its mission and vision can be achieved with the youth sector involved in its operation, and that it needs the idealism and dynamism of the young to stay relevant to the times.

The Tsinelas Campus Volunteer Program was formed out of this conviction. The program organizes students who share in Tsinelas’ cause and makes them active members of the organization. It helps students become more socially aware and involved in other people’s struggle for their right to education. (more…)

first year of operation

SY 2004-2005

 June 2004

TSINELAS officially started its operations with a visit to Lut-od National High School to meet with students, teachers and parents. The group evaluated the needs of the students and the school and assessed where it could come in.
Before the visit, Tsinelas, with the help of the teachers in Lut-od, selected ten second year students - all of them in the honor roll - as “full scholars”. As such, the students will receive all basic school needs, like school fees, uniforms, bags, notebooks.

During the visit, the group got first-hand information of the difficulties the school and its students are experiencing.
    Aside from assisting the ten scholars, Tsinelas decided it should also help the entire school by giving it material assistance, like armchairs, office supplies, books, book shelves and minor repairs of its facilities. (more…)

Taking the first step

WHILE other teenagers spent their Saturday afternoon mall-roving last Aug. 6, a group of 22 students met in a forum that discussed volunteerism and teamwork.They are members of the newly organized group of University of the Philippines-Cebu College students who volunteered to be part of the Tsinelas Association Inc., a nongovernment organization that helps in the education of poor children in far-flung and depressed areas in the province.
